THOUSANDS of people headed to sunny Banstead on Saturday to enjoy the annual May fayre.

Organisers estimate 5,000 people attended the event to shop, watch the parade and enjoy the entertainment on display.

There were stalls selling balloons, cakes, doughnuts and pizza, while display teams of jugglers, cheerleaders and morris dancers entertained the crowds.

The parade travelled along High Street before heading to the orchard outside All Saints Church for the crowning of the May Queen and the opening of the fayre.

Hazel Davies, chairman of The Banstead Village May Fayre Group, said: "It was a really good community day with lots of people. And it was lovely and sunny as well."

This year's May Queen, Bethany Davies, 15, has chosen Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity (GOSHCC) to fundraise for.

Bethany and her family have strong links with the hospital, as she has received treatment there since she was four years old for a chest condition.

The Banstead May Fayre is organised every year by the Banstead Village May Queen Group Committee, which is comprised of 20 Banstead families who meet monthly to plan the parade, the crowning of the May Queen and the fayre.

If you would like to donate to GOSHCC text BVMQ99 followed by £2, £5 or £10 to 70070.
