POLICE officers tried a different kind of beat when they joined a merry band of morris dancers from Dorking for a jig.
The Rampant Rooster Morris dancers stopped by Reigate Police Station after their May Day morning dance to join in an event raising money for Cancer Research UK.
Officers were holding a cake contest to raise money for the charity after one of their colleagues, Sarah Crockford, was diagnosed with cancer.
The dancers were invited down to join the festivities – but officers got more than they bargained for when the Roosters proposed an "audience participation" dance.
Moments later a thin blue line of dancers had joined the colourfully dressed Roosters.
And staff cheered as two of the area's most senior policemen – Inspector Richard Haycock and Detective Inspector Anthony Archibald – were convinced to swap their blues and twos for dancing shoes and join the performers.
DI Archibald, who also judged the cake contest alongside Insp Haycock, said: "Everyone needs a little bit of light-hearted entertainment in their day.
"It has been a really really busy few days and the contest and dance are making a nice change for everyone."
Insp Haycock added: "Bizarrely it was great fun. It was very therapeutic."
