WORK has begun to improve recycling facilities in East Surrey.
The Earlswood depot off the A23, owned by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, is undergoing redevelopment works to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
The work began last Monday and is expected to be completed at the end of the year.
The recycling centre next door will be unaffected.
The redevelopment will provide a new bulking facility on land to the rear of the depot, which will be dedicated to handling recyclables, food waste and rubbish before they are taken to specialist processing facilities.
The project is a joint effort between the borough council, Surrey County Council and contractors SITA.
SITA Surrey project manager Beverly Sheridan said: "We're excited to begin work on this new facility for Surrey that will support local residents' recycling efforts and help the county council to maximise the amount of rubbish it diverts from landfill."
Mike Goodman, Surrey County Council cabinet member for environment and planning, said: "Improving the Earlswood depot means Surrey residents will get even more out of their recycling."
