GATWICK will be road and rail ready for a second runway by 2021, claims the airport's senior transport advisor Hugh Sumner.
The planned improvements include a train to central London every 2½ minutes by 2019, rail capacity doubled by 2020, new Gatwick Express trains in service by 2016, and upgrades to M25 and M23.
Mr Sumner said: "Gatwick will be road and rail ready for a second runway by 2021, with no additional cost to the taxpayer. The ease at which these improvements can be delivered adds yet more weight to the case for a new runway at Gatwick."
By 2020, Gatwick will connect directly to 175 mainline stations and 1,000 with a single change, he added.
Gatwick and Heathrow airports are both vying to build an extra runway. The Airports Commission is currently considering both proposals and will make a recommendation after next year's General Election.
