STUNT cyclists and mini-footballers were the stars as Merstham held its second annual community day.

More than 2,000 people turned out for the event run jointly by Travel Smart – Surrey County Council's sustainable transport project – and Merstham Football Club on Saturday.

The event expanded to such an extent this year that it needed to be held in the larger recreation ground instead of the club's smaller Weldon Way premises.

Crowds enjoyed stunt cyclists and visiting community group stalls while mini-Messis were able to have a chance of glory in penalty shoot-outs and mini football tournaments put on by the football club.

Along with the sporting shows, there was also traditional fairground fare such as bouncy castles and face-painting – all free of charge.

Steve Weeks, chairman of the Merstham FC supporters' club, said: "It went very well.

"We had a lot of families with children and I know it was very stress-free for parents because their kids could just have a go on all the free stalls.

"There were a lot of smiling faces and we got a lot of great comments."

He added: "There was a great community atmosphere. A lot of organisations came along and showed off their crafts and what they offer."
