DEMANDS for "urgent" action to tackle Caterham Valley's parking problems have suffered a setback.
It follows a 53-name petition presented to Tandridge District Council in April.
Petition organiser John Harvey, of Greenwood Gardens, Caterham, had said: "Demand for parking is increasing. The shortage creates highway congestion.
"The only visible reaction has been more yellow lines, which does not cure the problem.
"A first step is to identify potential [parking] sites before these are all taken for flats."
But the council's community services committee concluded last Thursday that, while the issue will be kept under review, no formal review of car parking in Caterham would be carried out at this stage.
Paul Barton, Tandridge's chief community services officer, explained: "Other than Timber Hill Recreation Ground, the council does not own any land in Caterham Valley.
"And so unless land is acquired, there is no opportunity for a council-owned car park, and some dependence has to be placed on privately-owned facilities."
Under a covenant, Morrisons lets the general public use 228 spaces in its multi-storey car park.
Although that agreement expires in December, Mr Barton remains confident the arrangement will continue, adding: "It seems unlikely that they [Morrisons] would wish to implement any changes which could deter shoppers from using their store."
