FINAL plans for the regeneration of Merstham have been given the stamp of approval by councillors.

The redevelopment of the Iron Horse pub site and the Triangle site should be starting shortly after Reigate and Banstead Borough Council's planning committee approved the proposals.

On the Iron Horse site in Bletchingley Road, four shop units will be built with ten flats above at first and second-floor levels. One of the retail units has already been confirmed as a Morrisons "M" convenience store.

On the triangular parcel of land between Portland Drive and Bletchingley Road, a community hub and youth skills centre, with four shops, will be built.

At the meeting, held on Thursday, councillors were keen for the work to finally begin.

Councillor Julian Ellacott said: "These plans have been widely consulted on far more extensively than any normal planning application. The consent of local residents has clearly been expressed."

Councillor Michael Blacker said: "I welcome this development and want it to go ahead as quickly as possible."

Merstham's regeneration also includes demolishing the Portland Drive parade of shops and flats and building new modern homes in their place.
