Surrey Police is appealing for witnesses to help establish the exact circumstances surrounding how a man suffered serious head injuries in Walton-on-the-Hill.

The man, who is believed to be in his thirties, was found by members of the public lying in the middle of the road in Breech Lane at around 1.30am this morning (Sunday, July 20).

Officers and the South East Coast Ambulance Service quickly attended the scene and the man was taken by ambulance to St George's Hospital in Tooting where he remains in a serious condition.

Following the incident, police closed Breech Lane between the junction with Chequers Lane and the St Peter Church of England entrance while investigators examine the scene.

Police carried out a thorough investigation into the incident, including reviewing local CCTV footage and house-to-house inquiries.

Temporary Detective Inspector Sailesh Limbachia said: "This is clearly a concerning incident where a man has sustained serious injuries and we need to find how this happened as soon as possible.

"At this stage it is not clear if the man sustained his injuries as a result of a collision with a vehicle, an assault or by some other means so I urgently need to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard anything late on Saturday evening or in the early hours of this morning.

"The incident took place close to a main road so I feel certain that residents living in the area or passing pedestrians and motorists must have seen or heard something out of the ordinary.

"The man may have been on a night out in the local area on Saturday so I would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen a man walking in the direction of Breech Lane in the early hours of the morning.

"I would like to reassure residents that this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no indication of any wider risk to the local community and we are working closely with the local neighbourhood policing team to keep people updated."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with any information on how the man sustained his injuries is asked to call Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference 45140060505, or call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
