Dorking near-miss prompts road safety call

A WORRIED father whose daughter was nearly run over wants action to improve a town centre road.

Paul Butcher's ten-year-old daughter had to be pulled clear of the vehicle as it mounted the pavement on Dene Street, Dorking, on Friday morning.

Mr Butcher, of Wathen Road, takes his two children to school along that street every morning and fears someone could be seriously hurt.

Speaking after the near-miss on Friday, he said: "A vehicle came up this morning really fast and I had to drag my daughter away.

"Every morning I have to walk down there. Every morning the cars are forced to drive up on to the pavement and every now and again there is a near miss."

Mr Butcher said the narrow street makes it impossible for cars to avoid the pavement.

He said: "The cars are forced to do it each morning and each evening.

"There are huge lorries that come down there and the pavements are really, really narrow; they have got nowhere else to go.

"It is dangerous; an accident waiting to happen."

John Meudell, of Mole Valley Cycling Forum, who lives in Dene Street, said: "It has been a problem for more than ten years.

"I have been complaining about this for all that time to Dorking Town Centre Forum, to Surrey Highways and to Surrey Police.

"It affects local residents. People walking their kids up to St Paul's School have complained about it. It has been a serious issue for years.

"People with buggies have to go into the road. It affects the elderly and disabled and the young kids as well."

He added: "In addition, there is a continuous problem with delivery vehicles obstructing pedestrian traffic by parking up on the pavement, even though there's no restriction on them parking on the roadway."

Surrey County Council, which is responsible for managing roads, had failed to comment as the Advertiser went to press.
