A RAFT of new double yellow lines are to be painted on sections of roads across the borough.

Surrey County Council's local committee for Reigate and Banstead will be asked to give the green light to new parking restrictions at more than 50 locations at its meeting on Monday.

All-day commuters, drivers who double-park making it tricky for larger vehicles, including fire engines, to pass, motorists who leave their vehicles too close to junctions and school-run drivers could all find their usual parking places off-limits.

Restrictions are due to come in around a number of schools, including Wray Common Primary School, in Reigate, where gridlock has caused stand-up rows among parents.

New stretches of double yellow lines will be painted on parts of Conniston Way, Windermere Way and Kendal Close, where the school entrance is.

Tess Powell, 42, who lives in Windermere Way and has two children at the school, said: "At the moment it is just complete gridlock, especially when it is raining.

"People try to drop off at the school, and they can't get out, cars physically cannot pass. If people adhere to the double yellows, hopefully it will help, and make it safer for people crossing the roads."

School business manager Julie Newton said: "Wray Common school welcomes any parking restriction proposals which will improve the safety of our families who walk or cycle to and from school, by reducing the congestion outside the school at drop-off and pick-up times.

"We are, however, mindful of our immediate neighbours and would therefore expect there to be a full consultation with all stakeholders before any restrictions are put in."

Drivers will no longer be able to double-park in part of Blackborough Road, Reigate. Resident there, Peter Chesterton applauded that as "fantastic" news.

"It has got worse recently and it makes it really hard to back out," he said. "It is a bus route as well, so it is crazy to have cars parked up both sides. I think double yellow lines are a good idea."

Chairman of the local committee and county councillor for Merstham and Reigate Hill, Zully Grant-Duff, said: "It is becoming more and more imperative because everybody is under more pressure to reach their destination, whether that's getting to work, to a train station or to school on time, and people are driving and parking without due care.

"The law forbids parking on a corner anyway. It is a danger to everybody, pedestrians and motorists. We have to enforce it with double yellow lines."

The committee will be asked to approve the changes, and allocate £20,000 from the 2013/2014 budget to make them, when it meets at Reigate Town Hall on Monday at 2pm.

A report to the Reigate and Banstead local committee meeting states: "There is considerable demand for residents parking in some parts of the borough. In recent times, the most requests have come from Redhill residents in roads around the college [East Surrey College] and town centre." The roads which will be included in the consultation are College Crescent, Claremont Road, Alpine Road, Ranmore Close, Lynwood Road, Ridgeway Road, Oakdene Road, Oakwood Close, Grovehill Road, Fengates Road, Hillfield Road, Palmer Close, Garlands Road, Dome Way, Carrington Close, Rutland Close, Garibaldi Road and Brighton Road. Other roads in Reigate and Horley could be added to the scheme next year, if funding is available.
