MOST people would find an excuse not to exercise during the festive season, but a personal trainer from Reigate found a worthy cause.

Martyn Parry, from Pride Personal Training, decided to harness the Christmas spirit and invite people to a money-raising workout in aid of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

The Colman Redland Centre, in Croydon Road, was filled last Sunday with fitness fans, lunging, squatting and planking for charity.

Mr Parry said: "I was quite nervous because it was our first charity event and I've always wanted to do something for Battersea.

"Every single Christmas since I can remember, I always asked for a kitten or a puppy. I've been obsessed with animals since I was a child.

"It's an amazing shelter and they do a lot of work for thousands of dogs and cats all around the UK."

Participants were challenged to a Twelve Days of Christmas-themed circuit, with an exercise for each day, while wearing fancy dress.

"I really wanted it to be a success for Battersea so was really happy with how it went," Mr Parry said.

"Everybody had a lot of fun, raised some money and got into the Christmas spirit."

The event – with funds collected on the day as well as being donated online – has so far raised £425.
