EPSOM & Ewell Borough Councillors are furious at the announcement that the merger of Epsom General Hospital and Ashford & St Peter's will not take place as planned.
The development was discussed as an urgent item at the Social Committee meeting last Thursday (October 25).
Councillor Jean Steer, Chairman of the Committee, said: "We have asked for an immediate meeting with those people in the NHS that are behind this decision to explain what is happening.
"This will inevitably raise serious concerns for the future amongst both staff and our local residents.
"We will be pressing for a full explanation of the options moving forward and the timescale that is involved. To delay this too long is unacceptable."
Epsom & Ewell Borough Council have asked to meet with Ruth Carnall, Chief Executive of NHS London and Matthew Hopkins, Chief Executive of the Hospital Trust.
Councillor George Crawford, Vice Chairman of the Committee and Chairman of the Health Liaison Panel, said: "This has come right out of the blue. Only last month we had a meeting in the Council Chamber when Ashford & St Peter's set out the future for EGH after the merger. There was no hint then that this might happen."
The council are seeking an early resolution and will be approaching Chris Grayling, as the local MP, and Surrey County Council's Health Scrutiny Committee.
Councillor Steer is appalled that they have to wait to see what will happen to the Epsom General Hospital site.
She added: "We thought we had made some real progress in securing the future for the services provided from the EGH site.
"It is appalling that, yet again, we have to wait to see what will happen to this essential facility.
"We shall certainly be demanding that the NHS retains all of the current activities on this site in the meantime."
