THE relocation of a council advice centre will go ahead despite the initial decision being "called in" by councillors.

Last week Mole Valley District Council's scrutiny committee told the executive committee it must reconsider moving the Leatherhead Help Shop from its High Street premises to the library in Church Street.

But on Tuesday the executive pushed ahead, despite cross-party opposition from all five Leatherhead councillors.

Concerns were raised that the Help Shop would be harder to access and would leave a vacant premises in the High Street.

Tory councillor for Leatherhead South Rosemary Dickson said: "Leatherhead is a dying town and it will be perceived that Mole Valley is paying scant regard to this if they pull out."

The executive came under fire in September after invoking a "break clause" on the shop's lease without consultation.

Leatherhead South councillor David Sharland said: "We still are very concerned about this particular action and certainly the lack of transparency early on. If that had been clearer then we could have had this as a sensible discussion, whereas now it's almost a fait accompli."

The move is expected to save the council £40,000 a year.

Councillor Simon Ling said: "I don't think it's a responsible use of taxpayers' money to pay £40,000 simply to keep a shop occupied."

Council leader Chris Townsend accepted a suggestion from the scrutiny committee to create an action group to look at moving the library and Help Shop to the town centre.
