A SURREY Police employee has resigned after alleged inaction over a complaint by the mother of murdered Caterham boy Breck Bednar.
Two months before the 14-year-old was fatally stabbed last February, his mum Lorin LaFave rang Surrey Police to raise concerns that Breck was being groomed online by Lewis Daynes, 19.
Daynes, who fatally stabbed the boy in his Essex flat, admitted the murder.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment at Chelmsford Crown Court yesterday, with a minimum jail term of 25 years.
A spokesman for the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which is looking into Surrey Police's response, said: "We served a misconduct notice on a staff member at Surrey Police contact centre.
"Another staff member, who took the call, resigned from the force last August."
IPCC Commissioner Jennifer Izekor, said: "We have obtained details of the call made by Breck's mother to Surrey Police about the communication between her son and Lewis Daynes.
"We need to understand how that information was acted on, and whether more could or should have been done to safeguard Breck."
Serving police staff with a misconduct notice advises them that their conduct is under investigation - it is not judgmental, said the IPCC.
Surrey Police's Assistant Chief Constable Gavin Stephens, said "A review of practices in our call handling centre has since been carried out.
"Changes have been implemented to improve the way information is handled and shared.
"We will co-operate fully with the ongoing investigation."
