MOLE Valley District Council is to receive of one of the highest levels of Government funding in the country.

The council is to receive a raise of 0.6 per cent to its 2014/15 Revenue Support Grant which is to be cut by an average of two per cent across the country.

The grant, paid from national business rates, is added to locally collected council tax to fund council services. Mole Valley's grant for 2011/12 was £3.91 million, or roughly one third of the council's £9.6 million budget.

The 0.6 per cent figure was revealed during a House of Commons debate involving Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles and opposition MP Hilary Benn on December 19.

Mr Benn questioned the logic behind the decision, which favoured what he referred to as one of the "ten least deprived authorities in England".

He said: "Why will today's announcement mean that Liverpool will see a 6.2 per cent fall, of £35 million, in its spending power in 2014/15 compared with the previous year, when Mole Valley will see an increase of 0.6 per cent? How on earth can the Secretary of State justify that?"
