A NEW Tesco convenience store could open in Dorking after the closure of a restaurant.
Frankie and Benny's in Reigate Road closed on Friday – and staff there said it would be replaced by a Tesco Express.
Tesco corporate affairs manager Simon Petar told the Advertiser that this was "rumour and speculation" – but refused to deny that Tesco planned to move into the vacant property.
Concerns have been raised about another supermarket chain coming to the town, although the possible Tesco store would be far smaller than the current Sainsbury's or Waitrose outlets.
Jacquetta Fewster, a member of Mole Valley Green Party, said: "They are really starting to mount up.
"It throws in the even greater question of whether we need the massive Sainsbury's that is likely to be built behind St Martin's Walk, as set out in the Dorking Area Action Plan.
"We at the Green Party would like to see the space used for more independent local shops and it's a shame that another corporate giant is swooping in on Dorking's limited space.
"It all adds to the pressure on the smaller stores to compete for our money.
"Certainly a smaller Tesco Express wouldn't threaten like a massive hyperstore but it still takes away business from little shops.
"These independent stores are what make Dorking special and they rely on us to spend money on their goods, so we will need to support the sandwich shops and newsagents more than ever."
The Advertiser understands Tesco would probably need to submit a "minor works application" rather than a full planning application to move into the former Frankie and Benny's site. Changes covered by this could include a new ATM and signage.
Harriet Landy, a resident of Pixham Lane, said: "I must say that I don't think it is as bad an idea as everyone seems to make out.
"I'm sure it will give a huge economic lift to an end of the town that is a little bit sad. Frankie and Benny's was highly underused so it serves Dorking to replace it with something that is going to be popular. It will also create more jobs and give us as additional choice, which can't hurt.
"At the moment none of the supermarkets have quick access so this will be a bit different."
