Surrey football managers want teams to keep playing over winter

As another weekend of football is lost to the weather, Mirror Sport asks local managers if they're in favour of taking a winter break East Grinstead Town manager – Simon Funnell :

"I would prefer to carry on playing. I don't think there is any reason to have one. Obviously if weather dictates that you can't play then so be it.

"But if you have too long a break, you would need to do a minor pre-season to get your fitness back.

"No-one likes pre-season and it is hard enough to do one, let alone two."

Dorking Wanderers manager – Marc White :

"I don't think we should have a winter break, these are the fixtures you relish, and besides, I wouldn't be able to escape the Christmas shopping if there was no football!

"What the leagues do need to do though is monitor clubs and how they maintain their pitches."

South Park manager – Joe McElligott :

"I think the conundrum would be when to hold a winter break. You could hold it in January and February and then have terrible weather in March.

"I'm not anti-winter breaks and having a couple of weeks off would be no bad thing, but I think we are more likely to see the league season extended.

"The Combined Counties League is gradually starting earlier and earlier towards the start of August, and I can see it getting extended towards May-time as well."

Horley Town manager Ali Rennie :

"Well, personally I go to the Caribbean every year so I'm a big fan, but in a footballing sense I don't want to be playing into the summer. If a winter break meant playing into June every year then I think that would bring about as many problem as it solves. Clubs who share with cricket teams would have a particular problem, but also the pitches could be rock solid which is nearly as bad as waterlogged."

Leatherhead manager Richard Brady:

"We've been pretty much playing on a Saturday and Tuesday since the start of the season, so I'm not sure what the leagues or the FA can do really.

"It's a difficult one [a winter break] because there's not a lot you can do about the weather at the end of the day."
