A ROAD has been closed since a landslip caused an oak tree to fall across it.

Raikes Lane in Abinger Hammer has been closed since Monday morning, leaving some people stranded and affecting local businesses.

Adrian Nelson, landlord of the Volunteer Pub in Water Lane, said residents of 25 homes had been left "imprisoned" by the landslip, and said trade had been severely affected.

"It is obviously a busy season for pubs this time of year so we have definitely been hurt by this," he said.

"We are very difficult to find as it is and customers are just turning back around. There's a huge oak tree just lying in the road and it is completely impassable.

"It happened early on Monday and some guy came by to put some signs up, but we haven't seen a soul down here since then to clear up the mess. On Wednesday morning I must have seen at least 25 cars come down here and then turn around and go back again. I'm getting fed up with it to be honest."

Abinger Hammer resident Leslie Philips added: "My sister lives right next to where the landslip occurred. She had to work on New Year's Day and it took her almost an hour more to get there.

"I know it's Christmas time and they might be struggling to get staff out here, but the road is basically closed anyway and this has trapped people."

Surrey County Council, which is responsible for the county's roads, had not commented as the Advertiser went to press, at which time the road was still closed.
