TEN affordable homes in Tatsfield will be completed in April, after a "huge need" was identified.
A mixture of one and two-bedroom flats, as well as two and three-bedroom houses, are being built by English Rural Housing Association.
The parish council, Tandridge District Council, Surrey Community Action and the housing association teamed up to build the homes in Lusted Hall Lane.
Bob David, Tandridge District Councillor for Tatsfield, said that he had become increasingly concerned about the amount of residents who had to move away because of house prices. The average price for homes in the village, revealed by property search website home.co.uk is £507,738. The website also states 41.9 per cent of homes for sale in the village are three bedroom, and 53.6 per cent of homes for sale are detached.
Mr David said: "How are young couples and families supposed to afford buying a place that costs this much?
"People may have to move away from Tatsfield when they come to move out, because house prices are huge for someone who is starting out. There is a huge need for more affordable homes in our village."
A year in the planning, the homes are due to be completed in the next three months.
"It is an exciting time and I cannot wait to see these homes completed and the first tenants move in," said Mr David. In 2008, the parish council commissioned Surrey Community Action to carry out a housing needs survey.
Every household was invited to take part by completing a questionnaire.
Mr David told the Mirror about 60 people registered their interest in the new properties through the survey.
"The homes are just for rental and not for sale," he said, "Only people who have a very strong local link will have made it through the final stage of the application.
"These homes could provide a great opportunity for people who have grown up in the village and want to stay in the village or come back to us," added Mr David.
"It is something so important for us as a community and I hope that this positivity will continue."
