FIGURES released by the Home Office show a total of 204 antisocial behaviour orders (Asbos) have been issued in Surrey since the scheme was introduced.

Earlier this year Home Secretary Theresa May announced that Asbos and six related orders, including alcohol banning orders, will be replaced by a criminal behaviour order and a crime prevention injunction.

The power was most utilised in 2005 when it was used 4,122 times nationally and 50 times in Surrey, but it has tailed off in recent years.

Jo Grimshaw, from Surrey Police's offender management unit, said: "Asbos do work but we only use them when they are needed. If an individual chooses not to take the help and advice offered by us or our partner agencies to manage and change their behaviour then we would apply for an Asbo but only as a last resort."

In Mole Valley there are currently four active Asbos, the most recent of which was issued against Daniel Beckett, 30, of no fixed abode, after numerous public order and drinking offences.

The order prevents him from carrying or drinking alcohol, or being drunk in Leatherhead town centre or areas of north Leatherhead near Kingston Road and Cleeve Road.

He is also barred from entering any licensed premises or causing anyone alarm, harassment or distress in a public place anywhere in Surrey.

The order was issued on September 26 at Redhill Magistrates' Court and will remain in force for three years.
