Burstow road remains closed after burst water main

PART of a Burstow road has been closed due to damage from a burst water main.

A main in Antlands Lane burst yesterday morning and, although it has now been repaired, the road remains shut between Church Road and Shipley Bridge Lane while reconstruction work is carried out.

It is expected to reopen on Wednesday morning and diversions are in place.

Engineers from Sutton and East Surrey Water restored water supply to five of their initially affected customers yesterday evening.

Ian Adams, Engineering Manager at Sutton and East Surrey Water, said: "We responded immediately and fixed the burst main yesterday (Sunday). However, the flooding severely damaged a substantial piece of the road.

"Crucial repairs to the road are being made over the next two days. For safety reasons, a section of Antlands Lane will be closed while this essential work is carried out. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes."

Warlingham community hero meets England rugby star Chris Robshaw

AN UNSUNG hero has been presented with an award by the captain of the England rugby team.

For many years Tony Doe has worked humbly behind the scenes at Warlingham rugby club's Limpsfield Road ground. But last Tuesday he had his time in the limelight when he met the club's greatest former player.

England captain Chris Robshaw played for the club up to the age of 11 and has recollections of his mother dropping him off near the ground for colts' training sessions.

Last week, five deserving members of grass roots clubs, including Warlingham, which have produced future England internationals, were publicly acclaimed.

Mr Doe has acted as both player and manager over the past ten years, lending a hand with all four senior teams. And he regularly rolls up his sleeves to get involved in building and ground work at the club, all unpaid and in his own time, despite still running his own business.

The "heroes" got to watch the England squad train at their Pennyhill Park base near Bagshot in Surrey. They were then presented with plaques by the England players connected to their club.

Mr Doe said: "It's an honour to be nominated. I can't believe I'm here watching the England squad train. We're very proud of Chris. I was one of his coaches when he first started playing for Warlingham, he was always a special player.

"To be here and to meet England head coach Stuart Lancaster is unbelievable."

Chris Robshaw, who is also captain of the Harlequins, said: "Playing for England is a huge honour, it's also a huge responsibility.

"It's because of people like Tony that there are opportunities to be part of the rugby family.

"It's great that the squad recognises it's regional connection, rugby has given me so much and I'm proud today that I can give a little back."

Bench installed in memory of much-loved Banstead mother and son who died in car crash

DEVOTED friends of a Banstead mother and son who were killed in a car crash have created a memorial for them.

The community was left in shock on July 5 when 11-year-old Kai Arnold and mum Nicola Morris, 29, died in a collision in Banstead Road near Ewell.

Now four months on, friends have continued to remember the pair, who left behind dad David Arnold and seven-year-old brother and son Alfie.

Reigate School pupil Jake Noakes, who used to play with Kai at weekends, decided to launch a fundraising campaign for a memorial bench.

Within two weeks, the 13-year-old raised more than £1,400 and the bench has now been installed by the carved log in Woodmansterne, where Kai used to play.

Jake told the Mirror: "We wanted something to remember him by and the bench was the first thing that came to mind. We set up a page online and put it on Facebook. In the first day we got about £400. It really goes to show how much they were loved. Lots of people loved them."

A plaque donated by Mr Snob in Banstead reads: "In loving memory of Nicola Morris and Kai Arnold, forever in our hearts."

On Saturday, Jake invited Kai's former Woodmansterne Primary School classmates, including some now at The Beacon where Kai was due to start Year 7 in September, to have their picture taken at the bench.

"They all wanted to be there," Jake said. "They were all quite close to him. Everyone loved him, he was really popular. Everyone loved his laugh, he had the most cheekiest laugh, it would make everyone smile. He was so kind to everyone, he never argued about anything, he'd be there for anyone if they needed anything."

He added that Kai and Nicola's family were "really grateful" for the bench and have spent time there since it was installed. "It's in the middle of Woodmansterne, which means Kai's friends will see it on the way to school.

"A lot of parents take their kids to the log after school so they will sit down and use it as well."

A DRIVER was taken to hospital this morning (Monday, November 10) after a collision on the M25.

A firefighter from Reigate station told the Surrey Mirror Series his crew had arrived on the clockwise stretch of the motorway between the junctions for Reigate and Leatherhead to find a silver van had left the road and crashed into an embankment.

The van's driver had managed to free himself from the vehicle with only minor injuries and was taken to hospital by road ambulance.

Traffic is still slow on the motorway this morning following the incident, which took place around 5.30am.

One lane is closed and cars are queuing between Junction 8 for Reigate and Junction 9 for Leatherhead.

The Highways Agency tweeted to say the incident caused severe barrier damage.

Phil Beer,"Plays Guitar and Fiddle.Sings a bit." (Talking Elephant TECD 272)-The multi-talented Mr.Beer has become a highly regarded figure in folk music circles through his work with outfits such as Show of Hands and The Albion Band but this excellent new offering is a purely solo affair, recorded live at various intimate venues during the past few years. Beer's choice of material is,as ever, quite impeccable, including  Jackson Browne's "The Rebel Jesus." Lowell George's classic road song,"Willin'"  and the great Nic Jones' arrangement of  the traditional "Warlike Lads of Russia."
"Ronnie Lane Memorial Concert" (Angel Air SJPCD 450)-London's Royal Albert Hall was the venue in April 2004 for a star-studded event  celebrating  the musical legacy of singer, bass player and songwriter Ronnie Lane.  Rock luminaries such as Ronnie Wood,Pete Townshend and Paul Weller joined forces  to revisit some of the timeless ditties that Ronnie helped to create during his time with The Faces and Small Faces as well as some charmingly bucolic  excerpts from his subsequent solo career led  by "The Poacher," "Harvest Home" and Lane's  infectious 1973 hit,"How Come."
Annie Keating,"Make Believing" (Self-Released)-This prime purveyor of gently raucous Americana has been compared to the likes of Lucinda Williams,Emmylou Harris and John Prine over the years, and she's certainly an acoustic balladeer of rare warmth, intelligence and charm. The bulk of Annie's sixth independent album  was recorded in the space of just  a weekend, and this lends a feeling of added spontaneity to fine tracks such as the  life affirming  opener "Coney Island" and the bittersweet finale,"If You Want To Fly."
The Walkabouts,"Nighttown" (Glitterhouse GRCD 811)- Glitterhouse's latest expanded Walkabouts re-issue focusses attention on this enigmatic outfit's 1997 offering,"Nighttown." This melancholic exploration of the life of the nocturnal city has been fleshed out a little with the inclusion of a bonus disc featuring the unadorned demo  versions of several of the tracks which would later find their way into the finished product. Creative mainstay Chris Eckman's unique musical vision is at its most arresting on songs such as "Follow Me An Angel" and "These Proud Streets,"  ably underpinned once again by the sterling  efforts of conductor/arranger Mark Nichols.

FOUR police forces, including Surrey Police, have released details of their most wanted burglary suspects.

Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Thames Valley Police are hunting for the men pictured at the top of this story, who could be responsible for dozens of break-ins across the region.

A three-week burglary campaign is currently being run across the four force areas and, as part of the on-going campaign, details of some of the most wanted burglary suspects are being issued to the public in a bid to help find them.

The four forces are searching for the following men:

It is thought the 64-year-old, of Marine Parade, Brighton, could be committing further offences.

THE Toy Retailers Association has announced the toys it believes will be topping the kids' Christmas wish lists this year.

Whyteleafe landlord fined £39,000

A LANDLORD has been fined £39,000 for not carrying out improvements to a damp house in Whyteleafe.

As well as the imposed by Redhill Magistrates on Tuesday, Gary Henderson-Thynne was ordered to pay back £1,658 for work carried out by Tandridge District Council.

The defendant, who was convicted of not complying with an improvement notice, was also ordered to pay legal costs of £510, and a £120 victim surcharge.

The court heard that a council officer pursued a complaint this year about the state of a property in Godstone Road.

Dampness and mould was found at the property which was in a state of some disrepair.

The council issued an improvement notice ordering work to be carried out on broken garden steps, ill fitting windows and doors, a leaking roof, a faulty heating system, inadequate insulation, structural defects and poor electrics.

Emergency work was carried out by the council to prevent structural collapse and to get rid of damp, the court was told.

Miss Christmas and a mystery guest to headline Reigate's Christmas festivities this year

MISS Christmas will make her return to Reigate for this year's festive celebrations.

The entertainer, who was a well-known part of the town's festivities, has been absent for the last two years.

But she will be back for the Reigate Christmas Fayre on December 6.

From 11.30am to 5pm, the town centre will be converted into a winter wonderland as 48 stalls take over Church Road with entertainment provided by school choirs, The Rock Choir and Vocal Dimension.

The event is organised by the Reigate Business Guild.

Guild member Shirley Cox said: "The planning is going really well. The event is going to be bigger than last year; we have got more stalls than we've ever had.

"It is great to have Miss Christmas back, she is coming back as a special trip to Reigate which will be great for the children."

There will be free parking in all Reigate and Banstead Borough Council car parks on the day and Santa Claus will arrive in Priory Park by helicopter at 11.30am.

The climax of the event will be the switch-on of the Christmas lights, which will be done by an as-yet-unannounced "mystery guest" at 4.30pm.

Street entertainers, including stilt walkers, will add to the festive fun and children young and old can take a donkey ride to Santa's grotto.

Reigate businesses and groups, including Willows florists, Chalk Hills Bakery, The Tinderbox, Run Reigate and the 30th Scout Group are involved with running the event and will have stalls in the town on the day.

The fayre, which launched in 2011, attracts thousands to the town and Mrs Cox believes it is a boon for all the businesses.

She told the Mirror: "It is something that I think is great for the town.

"It is a community event and a community day. It is not a money-making day for the Guild, it's something we do to give back to the people of Reigate.

"From the looks on everyone's faces each year they seem to really enjoy it and it is really good for the town.

"It benefits everyone I think. People do wander and they say how lovely the day is. People walk around Reigate and they say 'I didn't know that was there'."

ROUND UP: Whyteleafe and Merstham knocked out of FA Trophy

IT WAS cup disappointment for Merstham and Whyteleafe as the east Surrey duo both exited the FA Trophy. Aaron Rhule scored twice but it wasn't enough to see the Moatsiders past Ryman League Premier Division hosts AFC Hornchurch. The Essex side opened the scoring after six minutes from the penalty spot, George Purcell scoring, and it was 2-0 just two minutes later after Martin Tuohy capitalised on a miss-hit goal-kick. However, Rhule pulled a goal back for the Surrey side after ten minutes and then equalised on 34. On the stroke of half-time, Purcell scored again to give the hosts the lead, and despite pressure from the Moatsiders they couldn't find an equaliser. Hornchurch made it 4-2 Tuohy scoring, in the 90th minute. Whyteleafe also went behind against local side Leatherlead, Vasieleious Karagiannis scoring after 38 minutes, however on 63 minutes Greg Andrews equalised with a header against his former club. The Tanners were back in front on 70 minutes, Karagiannis scoring again, before Mark Nwokeji made it 3-1 seven minutes later. KIernan Hughes-Mason wrapped up the scoring, making it 4-1 Leatherhead, four minutes from time. In the Ryman League Division One south, Chipstead were held to a 1-1 draw at Hythe Town despite taking the lead through Dan Moody. The games of Redhill, South Park, Horley Town and Lingfield were postponed due to waterlogged pitches.

BEST-SELLING Alex Scarrow has enthused pupils at Dunottar School in Reigate.

The highly acclaimed author of the TimeRiders series was originally in a rock band before becoming a computer games designer. Believing that his ideas for games would be more effective as novels, he became an author.

Christina Turner, an English teacher and librarian at Dunottar, said: "His talk was interspersed with a video trailer for the books as well as slides showing how the world might look now if certain events in history had not happened. He read the first two short chapters of TimeRiders 1, set on the Titanic as it began to sink.

"These were intensely gripping and enthused the pupils to read the novel for themselves."

The pupils quizzed Alex, after which he signed copies of his books.

The students are now drafting entries for a competition in which they write an introductory paragraph to their own TimeRiders book in the style of Alex Scarrow.

The winning entry will be posted on his new website.
