COMMUTERS in Surrey will be hit hard by the proposed Super Peak fare hikes - with one route doubling in price. The Government's Rail Fares and Ticketing Review, due to be finalised next month, proposes hiking fares on the most popular trains on top of planned fare rises. Figures produced for the Labour Party by the House of Commons Library show that the cost of season tickets will increase by up to £3,567 on the South East's most congested routes over five years. For Surrey commuters, this means a season ticket for the 07.32 South West Trains Woking to London Waterloo service would increase by £2055.00 from £2896.00 to £4951.00 over five years if the plans go ahead. Maria Eagle MP, Labour's Shadow Transport Secretary, said: "Instead of pricing commuters off peak time trains through expensive new Super Peak tickets, ministers should tackle the overcrowding that blights the journey to work for many commuters. "Most people cannot simply pick and choose when they start work and households already facing a cost of living crisis will simply face even greater pressure on their household budgets thanks to these plans. "These Super Peak fare rises of as much as 40 per cent over five years come on top of the planned annual increases of as much as nine per cent, despite David Cameron's broken pledge to cap fare rises at just one per cent above inflation." The planned changes would have far-reaching effects throughout the south east. In Oxfordshire season ticket prices for the 06:30 First Great Western Banbury to London Paddington service would increase by £3567 over five years. Commuters using the 07.44 First Great Western Henley-on-Thames to London Paddington service also face an increase of £2404. In Hampshire commuters on the 07.14 South West Trains Alton to London Waterloo service face increases of £2656.00 over the next five years taking the price of a season ticket to £6400.00.
