Firefighters were faced with a 'significant hazard' after the gas and electricity meters were damaged in a blaze at a Reigate home on Saturday morning.
Crews arrived at the Atherfield Road house at 5.57am to find blue flashing lights and loud bangs coming from the electricity supply after the cables were damaged.
Steve Pointer, station manager and incident commander at Surrey Fire and Rescue headquarters, said it was difficult getting into the property because the damaged meters were near the front door.
"We got the gas and electricity authorities down as soon as possible and the gas board confirmed [there had been] no leakage and isolated the supply," he said.
"The electricity board are in the process of isolating the supply as we speak."
Station manager Pointer said the severity of the fire made it impossible for crews to get up stairs so they used to get in through a bedroom window at the back.
The owner of property was suffering from smoke inhalation and taken to East Surrey Hospital.
Investigations in to the cause of the fire have been passed onto the police, who are currently at the scene.
Station manager Pointer was unable to comment on whether it was suspected arson, but said: "We always consider all causes and never ruling anything out."
