Top-ten finishes felt like step back

MATT FLOWERS says he was disappointed with his weekend at Silverstone, despite three top-ten finishes.

The Banstead racer finished seventh, ninth and tenth in the three races at the Northamptonshire circuit as he consolidated his place in the top ten of the Ginetta GT5 Challenge Championship.

But having seen a noticeable improvement in pace during the previous round at Rockingham, the 24-year-old Academy Motorsport driver said he felt disappointed not to be challenging for podiums.

"The pace just wasn't really there," he said.

"It was good to get three solid finishes again, but I felt like I was fighting to be in the top ten.

"I felt at Rockingham that we were progressing nicely and I was hoping to be challenging for the podium at Silverstone, so I am a bit disappointed as it almost felt like it was taking a step backwards."

Flowers said he felt there were reasons for that though, including a lack of money in the budget for testing having spent a lot to repair the car following his opening weekend crash at Oulton Park earlier this season.

On top of that, he said the wet weather on Friday at Silverstone prevented him from doing much testing there too.

But he said he is at least pleased to be challengin in the top ten of the Championship standings, adding that he is hoping to make some improvement at the next round at Snetterton in three weeks time.

He said: "The aim really is to get towards the top six in the Championship and to start challenging for podiums.

"I want to be doing that sooner rather than later and I am sure that at some point, it will come together.

"It is just a question of putting the work in and hopefully it will happen soon."

And Flowers said he is looking forward to the challenge at Snetterton – a track he has raced on before.

He said: "Hopefully I can get on top of some of the issues and hopefully the weather will be kinder there.

"I have raced at Snetterton a couple of times before, although they have made a few changes there.

"I don't quite know what to expect as everyone seems to be improving, particularly in terms of pace, and I need to do that too."
