FUNDRAISERS braved rivers of mud and tricky terrain to complete an Army assault course for charity.
More than 2,500 "nutters" completed up to four laps of the 7km course at this year's Nuts Challenge, held near Henfold Lakes in Newdigate, on Saturday and Sunday.
The annual event involves several stages of running, crawling and climbing through mud pits and tunnels, with runners raising sponsorship money for completing laps.
On Saturday, entrants in the challenge could choose to attempt one lap of the course, called More Nuts, two laps, called Mixed Nuts, or three laps, called Completely Nuts.
Sunday was devoted to Tough Nuts – people attempting four laps of the course – with fewer than half of the 100-plus entrants finishing.
Dorking duo Dawn Smith and Casi Howard tackled the course on Saturday as part of efforts to raise money for helpline FamilyLine, which is based in Leatherhead.
Ms Smith, who works alongside Ms Howard at Sainsbury's in Dorking, said: "We put in quite a few miles' roadwork before the event, but no amount of training could have prepared me for that.
"It was very squelchy underfoot; I am sure there's something living in that pond."
Gary Fenning, from Ashtead, also ran the course on Saturday, raising more than £500 for Cancer Research UK.
"Both my parents died from cancer and my dad was in the army, so I thought it was fitting to do an assault course in memory of them both," he said.
