Dorking FC boss seeks FA Vase tonic after league torment

DORKING boss Glynn Stephens says he welcomes the distraction of the cup this week as his side look to put their woeful league form behind them.

The Chicks travel to face Kent Invicta side Glebe in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase on Saturday, with Stephens hoping his side can repeat the heroics that saw them beat Colliers Wood United 3-1 in the last round.

That was their sole victory in eight competitive fixtures this season, with the Chicks currently sitting bottom of the Combined Counties League Division One with no points to their name.

But Stephens says he feels his side will soon turn a corner, adding that the Vase provides an opportunity to put their disastrous start to the league campaign behind them.

The Dorking manager said: "I do welcome the distraction of the Vase this week and it is a chance for us to play without any pressure.

"We can't ignore the league table and the position we are in means that every league game comes with a degree of pressure.

"But we had a good win in the last round of the Vase and playing a cup game, the pressure is off everybody.

"Of course, it is still massively important for various reasons, not only the financial reward available, but we are looking forward to it and who knows, maybe we can be the surprise package in the Vase this year."

And Stephens is predicting an open game against Glebe, who won 4-3 against Oakwood in the last round to book their place in the second qualifying round.

He said: "Their record is won three, lost four, having scored 15 and conceded something like 16 or 17 goals.

"So that would suggest it could be an open game and we know from our matches that we are capable of scoring goals.

"We have created opportunities in every game and if we can get it right, hopefully we can win the game."
