Michael Wheatley appeared in court today (Friday, May 9) charged with armed robbery while on the run from an open prison in Kent.
The 55-year-old, also known as the "Skull Cracker" was arrested after a raid at a Chelsea Building Society in Sunbury, Surrey.
He stands charged with robber of £18,350, possessing an imitation firearm and being unlawfully at large.
Wheatley, wearing a grey t-shirt and flanked by four police officers, spoke only to confirm his name during the hearing which lasted five minutes.
No-one was hurt during the raid on the building society branch in Staines Road.
Redhill Magistrates remanded in custody to appear at Guildford Crown Court on May 29.
