Police have arrested a man in connection with a series of suspicious fires at sports clubs and other premises across Reigate and Banstead in the last month.

The 29-year-old from Horley was arrested late last night (FRI) on suspicion of arson and remains in police custody while a number of enquiries are carried out.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Antony Archibald, said: "The investigation into these fires remains a priority for East Surrey and this arrest is a positive step forward in the investigation.

"This is still very much an active investigation and I continue to urge anyone with information on the fires to contact officers as a priority.

"A dedicated team of detectives continue to work closely with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service and Reigate & Banstead Borough Council to support victims and help prevent further occurances.

"Reigate and Banstead Neighbourhood Inspector Andy Rundle, said: "I have seen first-hand the impact these fires have had on the local community but I hope news of this arrest goes some way to reassure the public.

"The fires have not just upset those directly involved but all those who police East Surrey and we will continue to patrol the affected areas while the investigation continues.

"On behalf of police in East Surrey I would like to thank those directly affected by these fires and the wider community for their continued support."
